Hike Kilimanjaro via the Marangu Route

About Marangu Route

The Marangu trail is the oldest and most established trekking route on Mount Kilimanjaro. It remains extremely popular primarily because it is the only route on the mountain that offers hut accommodation for trekkers.

If you prefer the comfort of huts on the trail, this is the only route on Kilimanjaro that offers permanent hut accommodation. The 6-day version is considered one of the easiest trails to climb Kili. It is also the most affordable but tends to be the most crowded route with limited scenic variety, as the ascent and descent follow the same path. The overcrowding on the Marangu trail is partly due to this.

What to Expect on Marangu route

A one-day safari from Arusha takes you to Lake Manyara, Tarangire, or the Ngorongoro Crater. Expect an early start, abundant wildlife, glimpses of Maasai villages, and breathtaking landscapes.

Marangu Route Detailed Itinerary

On the Marangu Route, you can expect a relatively easier ascent with hut accommodations at each camp, offering more comfort compared to camping. The route is the shortest and most popular, but it can be crowded, especially during peak seasons. While the scenery may not be as diverse as other routes, you'll pass through lush rainforests and alpine meadows. The route’s gradual climb is ideal for first-time trekkers, although the lack of acclimatization time may increase the risk of altitude sickness.
