Hike Kilimanjaro via the Rongai Route

About Rongai Route

The Rongai Route is the only Kilimanjaro route that approaches from the northern side, near the Kenyan border. It is the least crowded route, making it ideal for trekkers seeking solitude and a more remote experience. Unlike other routes, Rongai is drier with less rainfall, making it a great option during the wet season. The ascent is gradual, offering a steady acclimatization profile, but it has fewer opportunities for the “climb high, sleep low” technique, making proper acclimatization crucial. Trekkers pass through beautiful wilderness, alpine deserts, and caves before merging with the Marangu Route at Kibo Hut for the final summit push.

The best time to climb the Rongai Route is during the dry seasons—from January to March and June to October—when the weather is clear and trails are more manageable. However, because this route is drier than others, it can also be a good choice during the rainy season (April–May and November) when other routes get muddy. Rongai is best for trekkers looking for a quiet, less crowded climb with a higher chance of spotting wildlife, but it is slightly less scenic compared to routes like Machame or Lemosho. Its gentle gradient makes it suitable for beginners, but the final ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) is still challenging.

What to Expect on Rongai route

The Rongai Route offers a unique and rewarding trekking experience, known for its scenic beauty and quieter trails. As one of the least crowded routes, it provides a peaceful journey with stunning panoramic views of Kilimanjaro and the Kenyan plains. The dry climate on the northern side results in less rainfall, making it a great choice even during wetter months. Trekkers may also enjoy wildlife sightings, including colobus monkeys and antelopes in the lower forests. With a gradual ascent, the route allows for better acclimatization, increasing the chances of a successful summit while ensuring a comfortable trekking experience.
